We received this bundle of joy off the UPS man without even knowing a thing about it. The customer hadn’t even put their details inside the package. Clearly disgusted at being let down by their drive, they literally disowned it!

Not to worry though, they finally contacted us and said the drive had suddenly stopped being recognised by the computer. It made the odd squeaking sound, and nothing more.

Little did they know, they had sent us one of Western Digital’s new breed of hard drives. Resembling something from Harry Houdini’s handbook of anti-escapology tricks. In other words, this thing is locked up tighter than Chris Angel’s daily driver.

To keep it simple, Western Digital has designed a whole new subsystem that is anti-data recovery. But it needs more than a few words to discuss it here. So, I will go into more detail surrounding the problems we face with these newer drives in another post. Together with some of the tricks, we use to overcome their ‘Harry Houdini’ nuisances.

Needless to say, when these things start going bad, DIY data recovery can lead to total data loss very, very quickly.

Thankfully, this wasn’t the case for this one and we were able to get a 100% recovery for the customer without needing to do a cleanroom recovery on it, therefore saving the customer money.

So, if you value your data, and your Western Digital My Passport has started acting up, power it off and seek only professional help.

In addition, Western Digital has since released even newer generations of this drive, which have more security features on them, making recovery extremely difficult. If you own these newer models and they start behaving erratically, don’t risk your data trying to get it yourself, get professional help instead.
