Common NAS Device Issues

NAS devices are often situated out of sight and don’t have regular maintenance performed on them. Therefore, this can result in nobody noticing the early warning signs displayed via the unit that a disk is overheating or failing — until a second problem arrives and the volume goes down.

Network-attached storage (NAS) drives often fail due to poor ventilation, causing them to overheat, subsequently resulting in cooked hard drives. The damage from overheating drives ranges from malfunctioning PCBs, damaged magnetic read/write heads, to surface damage on the platters and many other problems.

Most multi-bay NAS devices store your files as a RAID array or a Synology SHR volume, though single-disk models exist too — Western Digital’s My Cloud range, for example. That’s why the most dangerous moment isn’t the failure itself, but what happens next: letting the unit attempt a rebuild, re-initialising it, reinserting drives in the wrong order, or running repair tools against the volume is the most common way recoverable data gets destroyed before it reaches a lab.

Under the hood, NAS units run Linux-based file systems — ext4 and Btrfs on current Synology models, ext4 and XFS on QNAP and Netgear — layered over mdadm and LVM structures, with your data wrapped inside inode structures far more complicated than a conventional Windows drive. These systems behave nothing like NTFS and punish generic recovery software.

Our approach never touches your originals: every member drive is imaged first, the array is reconstructed virtually from the images, and your files are extracted from the rebuilt volume. That includes arrays that dropped a second disk mid-rebuild, volumes corrupted by power cuts or firmware updates, and units that have been accidentally reset — including systems other companies have declined or attempted.

If you want to avoid further data loss at this stage, we recommend:

  • Power the NAS down and leave it down — every minute it runs against failing drives reduces what’s left to recover.
  • Do not let it attempt a rebuild, and never re-initialise the unit or run repair tools against the volume.
  • Do not reinsert or reorder drives — if you remove them, label each one with its bay number as you go.
  • Please do not dismantle your device in any way, and never open the lid of any hard drive — they are sealed for a reason.

What does NAS data recovery cost, and how long does it take?

Logical recoveries start from £350 and mechanical recoveries from £450, both including VAT. Multi-drive arrays and complex volumes are quoted individually after the free assessment — the honest answer depends on the drive count, RAID level and condition — but you’ll always receive one firm quote for approval before any chargeable work begins, and nothing is ever payable upfront. On our standard service, assessment typically happens within 3–7 business days of your unit arriving, with typical completion in 6–10 business days; faster priority levels are available if you need results urgently. Send your unit or drives by Royal Mail Special Delivery, have us arrange UPS door-to-door collection for £14.95, or drop off at our Moreton lab on the Wirral by appointment. And if we can’t recover meaningful data, there’s no recovery fee — on every case, not just the easy ones.
