Recovering Data from an OWC Accelsior 4M2 RAID 0
Recovering from an OWC Accelsior 4M2 PCIe 3.0 M.2 NVMe SSD
We took a call from a music studio who’s RAID setup had started causing them problems. They tried to work with the manufacturer (OWC) but they were unable to get them any data. Distressed at the thought of the loss of all their work, they reached out to a professional data recovery company.
This particular music studio produces music for some of the biggest names in the business. They sought reassurance regarding privacy concerns before making arrangements to get this case in to us. After listening to their list of clients, it was of no surprise why they were being cautious. They were also staring down the barrel of all kinds of legal problems if their current projects where unrecoverable.
No pressure then!
Once the drives were in our Lab, it was time to start working out what was going on with them.
The RAID assembly consisted of 4 x OWCS3DN3P2T20 OWC Aura P12 Pro 2.0TB M.2 NVMe SSD drives.
All hosted in a OWC Accelsior 4M2 PCIe 3.0 M.2 NVMe SSD RAID card.
Customer said the RAID was an 8TB RAID 0 setup and this was one of two assemblies. And between them both, they hosted the companies’ entire catalogue, including current and past projects.
No pressure again !
All four drives needed imaging in preparation for the virtual RAID reconstruction. Thankfully, we got good images of all four drives and were able to determine the RAID was a RAID 0.
But this RAID 0 (Stripe) used an unusual configuration to stitch it all together.
However, the RAID array had also become corrupted. So, we had to do some post processing of the RAID 0 array to get access to a functional HFS+ partition.
Once we got access to the file system, it was clear to see their clients were some of the biggest names around. So, our customer’s excitement was of no surprise to us when we broke the news to them.
That we had recovered 100% of their data 🙂
All done in a quick time frame, with minimal downtime for the music studio and more importantly, no data loss whatsoever!
